Leroy Weaver, age 53

Universal Athletic Club personal trainer Ricki Hamilton taught Leroy how to measure food portions, eat the right types of foods and which exercises to perform in what frequency. He lifted weights, participated in group fitness classes and ran on the elliptical machines.

The first three weeks of the program were the most difficult for Leroy. He struggled to lose weight and considered giving up. However, the relationships formed with others in the ‘Be A Loser’ program provided accountability and motivation.

“We supported one another. We followed the TEAM (teamwork, enthusiasm, accountable, motivated) mantra,” Leroy said. “It takes patience and a commitment to get results, like all things in life.”

Leroy is now training for a 5-mile run and has his sight sets on a 10-mile race in 2009.

“Everyone has a mental image of what they used to do,” Leroy said. “You can make it reality again if you really want it.”

Charles Kirstner, age 73

"I saw what they were doing and thought, 'I can do that'," Chuck said. After working his way up, Chuck began competing in the World Natural Powerlifting Federation (WNPF).

In Nov. 2007, Chuck set a dead lift world record of 325 pounds during an event in Atlanta, GA.

On May 30, 2008, Chuck set a national barbell curl record in the over age 70, 220-pound class. He lifted 100 pounds during a WNPF event in Ephrata.

As Chuck approaches the end of his second year as a competitive power lifter, he plans to drop to the 198-pound weight class. The weight class change would give Chuck more opportunities to set records.

"Being a record setting power lifter is about technique," Chuck said. "I've learned the technique, now I want to take it to the next level and get even stronger."

Chuck continues to come to Universal Athletic Club for two hours a day about 4-5 days a week to do an hour of cardio and lift weights. "I've never looked at age as a barrier," he said. "I also discovered that I enjoy going to the gym. I would rather workout than play golf or ping pong."
