From Our Family to Yours… Welcome!
Universal Athletic Club has been privately owned and operated since 1994 by Lancaster County residents Rick and Mary Casselbury.
It Started With A Passion For Fitness And Family
A few years after graduating from college, Rick and Mary got married and decided to settle in Lancaster to be close to family. Their mutual love of exercise and playing sports turned into a passion for the fitness industry.
They decided to start their own health club and purchased The Olde Hickory Racquet Club in 1994. As the business grew, they wanted to meet the needs of more people, especially families with young children. Having two young children of their own gave them an appreciation for how difficult it is for parents to work out at the gym without someone to watch their children.
That’s why they created the Kidz Klub and put in the Kidmazium, so that kids can come here and be active too. In fact, there are no TV’s, video games or mobile devices in Universal’s kid play areas.
Making a “Splash” in the Community
Another major addition to the club was the indoor pool complex, which they added to meet the needs of those who prefer water exercises due to certain interests, health conditions or injuries. The pool complex offers aqua-fitness classes, lap swimming, swim lessons and more.
Always Adding And Expanding The Facilities, Programs & Services For You
Over time several new programs and facilities were added or expanded, including an indoor (4-lane) track, full-sized basketball court, personal training, and martial arts programs, a yoga/Pilates studio; café, summer camp and more. Another major transformation took place with Group Fitness. After bringing in the world-class program Les Mills International, Universal has been able to offer a the largest variety of classes for all abilities and interests.
Over the years, UAC also added a brand new 2-story addition featuring a phenomenal new Group Fitness Studio, Cycling Studio, and dedicated Kids’ Court. The Kidz Klub was also expanded to include all new features and a third floor for kids’ classes and games.
The Casselbury’s Continued Focus
Rick and Mary, along with their friendly staff from “all walks of life” offer a place for everyone to feel comfortable, whether you’re 2 or 92. They believe fitness shouldn’t be scary; it should be enjoyable. If you love what you do, you’re more likely to be successful in reaching your goals and living a healthy and happy life.
This philosophy of “respect that everyone has a different fitness vision”, is so much a part of Universal’s member success it was profiled in “The Lessons In Fitness Leadership” series published by IHRSA, as a model for others in the health club industry to learn from.
