Martial Arts Member Success Stories

Jaden & EmmaJean Ovalle

Jaden:

Age 13, High Red Belt, 3rd Degree

“I started taking Martial Arts classes at UAC in September 2015 because I was interested in finding a new sport I could enjoy. I like the structured classes and the challenges in training as I move up in belt rank.

Master Oplinger really supported me when I went to the state TKD competition. Mr. Hilbert gives me a physical challenge on Monday nights. The teacher assistants Chris and Andrew always make sure my forms are exact.

Taekwondo teaches respect for all people, and I use that in my other sports. It has helped with my coordination and mental strength. I have confidence in approaching people too. I also have more stamina for sparring. My goal is to one day reach 3rd degree black belt!”

Age 10, High Red Belt, 2nd Degree

“I started taking Martial Arts classes at UAC two years ago. I watched my big brother in class and I wanted to try it out. It looked fun. I used to take my dolls and make them do Taekwondo while I watched my brother!

In class I like how Mr. Hilbert encourages us to do better. The teacher assistants Chris and Andrew help us with our forms, and Master Oplinger makes sure our skills are sharp.

Out in the ‘real world’ Taekwondo definitely helps me with coordination and to follow directions. I have severe dyslexia and it helps my brain to focus and remember. It helps me get stronger too. My future goal is to earn my black belt in the fall, and to go to ‘States’ in the Spring!”

Christopher and Andrew Nguyen have been taking Taekwondo classes at Universal Athletic Club since they were 6 and 4 years old.

Now they are both 2nd Degree Black Belts and have earned the honor of being selected as Assistants to Instructors Master Jim Oplinger and Mr. Jeff Hilbert.

Christopher and Andrew also ran the Taekwondo sessions for the Camp Universal kids (ages 5-13) in Summer 2016, and will do the same in Summer 2017.

Christopher:

“I get a lot out of the Martial Arts program that is offered here at UAC; more than you could ever imagine. I have become a much-improved leader, both vocally and by example. Tae Kwo Do also forces you to mature quickly. I feel that I have gained the traits of self-control, self-discipline, self-confidence, and also the courage to be able to survive in the outside world through the UAC TKD program. Plus it’s a great source of exercise!

Keeping your body in shape and ‘in tempo’ is a great plus that comes from the TKD program. But many don’t realize the benefits mentally that comes from Tae Kwon Do. For me personally, it’s not just about learning new techniques and becoming polished and crisp in those fundamentals, it’s more about the confidence, courage, and strength that I build inside of me by committing to this art. That mental aspect itself has really helped me in real-life.

I admire how the UAC TKD instructors accommodate people of all ages. The instructors are great and patient with kids and are extremely cooperative with everyone. I’m on my way to achieving a 3rd Degree Black Belt in the next year or two.

It is a true honor and blessing to be in this position as assistant instructor. An opportunity like this doesn’t pop up very often, and I’m happy to handle this experience the right way and not take it for granted!

My advice to others who are thinking about trying Tae Kwon Do at UAC? Come in and try it!  Remember you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. We have great and very friendly staff. We’ll take care of you. Tae Kwon Do is a great way to get stronger physically and mentally, and at the same time it teaches many life lessons.”

Andrew:

“The Taekwondo program really gave me an opportunity to shine and be one of the role models of the program. A lot of kids really look up to my brother and me, and they have really embraced the things we do. We are truly blessed to be in this position. This program helped disciplined me and definitely helped me with improving as a leader.

When I first came into the program I didn’t want to talk as much, but my instructors encouraged me to get over the fear, and this allowed me to gain the confidence to really interact with the students and instructors in the program, as well as people in our society.

I love the leadership in the UAC TKD program. The instructors have always helped guide me in life decisions as well. The students here are so motivated to work hard and to become better at what they do.
I’m eager to move forward with my advancement in Tae Kwon Do. I believe the sky is the limit for me and that I can do anything as long as I set my mind it”

Meet Andy

“The UAC Taekwondo instructors are awesome. I’m so glad we found this place for Martial Arts!” – Andy

“When we found out that Martial Arts class were included with a family membership, joining was a no-brainer! Our son had been with another local school when we heard that Universal had a Martial Arts program.

We did the math, and discovered that our entire family could join Universal and take advantage of everything included in the membership (with free Taekwondo for our son) for about the same monthly cost! Now we’re all using the club and getting fitter as a family.” – A note from Andy’s Mom

Taekwondo for Exercise: Meet Leroy Weaver

“In addition to circuit and cardio training at the club, I chose to enroll in UAC’s Taekwondo program to help with self-discipline, burn calories and improve balance. Master Oplinger, Mr. Hilbert and Mr. Rojas are excellent instructors of the art.

They are personable and patient with all participants. I have met many great students in this program. I have earned my green belt and am working toward my blue belt status.”
